Considering the reality of Brazilian education, which is in the process of developing inclusive actions, this study analyzes the state of knowledge on literacy and literacy development of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and teacher education. The study sought research produced between 2014 and 2021, as published in the Catalog of Theses and Dissertations of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel. Twenty studies were categorized and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, using Content Analysis methodology. The results demonstrate: the challenges of educational inclusion; the urgent need for initial and ongoing teacher training; teachers' insecurity and lack of knowledge regarding Autism Spectrum Disorder; the reduction of literacy to decoding and phonological awareness; the decline in literacy development; the promising use of adapted digital games, playfulness, and stories; as well as confirming the relevance of research linked to teacher education.
