Education is a fundamental human right guaranteed in the Brazilian regulatory framework. However, when we look at studies on special education from an inclusive perspective, we realize that, for the target audience of special education, access, permanence, participation and learning seem to be far from achieving what is proposed in national guidelines and international declarations on the subject. With this in mind, the aim of this article is to discuss ableism and eugenics and their possible implications for Brazilian higher education, based on the voices of people with disabilities themselves, from a selection of speeches in publications in a high-impact journal that discusses disability studies. After a careful analysis of the discourses contained in the articles identified, we concluded with this study that ableism and eugenics have a direct relationship, corroborating in a series of obstacles in the most varied environments of society, including academia.
