In this article I present some strategies used by the Brazilian pianist Magdalena Tagliaferro regarding the formation of her repertoire, in order to obtain respectability as a musician by French music critics between 1908 and 1939. For this task, I use as sources the publications of the French press accessible by web on the platform www.retronews.fr, as well as the pianist’s own autobiography (Tagliaferro, 1979). As a result, I present three instances in which the French press portrayed the pianist: during the premieres of contemporary compositions, consolidating her image as a modern and eclectic interpreter; in the recordings made in studio, inserting it into the growing recording industry; and, finally, in her incursions as singer, a little explored facet of the pianist's career - which exemplifies her freedom and artistic daring.
