Abstract

In this article we interviewed the Italian composer Luigi Abbate. In our conversation we focused on music composition teaching, its developments and challenges. We started from the historical view of Professor Abbate, in order to carry out a brief comparative analysis of Italian and Brazilian music education. During the conversation, we passed through subjects such as the curriculum of composition courses, the use of the classical repertoire in class and the didactics of teaching music composition.

Author Biographies

Luigi Abbate, Conservatory Arrigo Boito of Parma

Luigi Abbate has been a Professor at the Conservatory in Parma since 1989 and Visiting Professor in European and South American Universities. Graduated in piano and composition from the Conservatory in Milan, he specialized in composition with new technologies, at the Les Ateliers Upic center and at IRCAM. He was winner of the “Wiener Internationaler Kompositionswettberb”, under the Artistic Direction of Claudio Abbado. He has received commissions and performances at: SIMC Amsterdam, Tel Aviv Biennale, Settimane Musicali di Stresa, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Teatro alla Scala Milan, Orchestra ORT Firenze, Teatro La Fenice Venice, Rai Turin, Biennale Musica Venice, among others. His compositions were broadcasted on Rai-Rome and abroad, and published by Casa Ricordi and Edizioni Suvini Zerboni Milan.

Eduardo Campolina, Federal University of Minas Gerais

Eduardo Campolina is a professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in the area of Composition. He completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in Musicology at the Université de Paris VIII. He attended the IRCAM analysis courses (Paris) with Robert Piencikowski. He obtained the first guitar prize by the Conservatoire de Saint Maur. He studied composition with Philippe Manoury, at the Musical Center Edgar Varèse. He completed his master's degree at the Faculty of Education, and his doctorate at the Faculty of Fine Arts at UFMG / Université de Paris 8. He published with Virgí­nia Bernardes the book "˜Ouvir para escrever ou compreender para criar' (Atêntica Editora, 2001).

Igor Leão Maia, Federal University of Minas Gerais

Igor L. Maia is a composer and conductor, Assistant Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). He holds a PhD in Musical Composition from King's College London where he was supervised by Silvina Milstein and George Benjamin. He did a Master's Degree in Music from the State University of Campinas and a Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He participated in several festivals and concerts in Europe, Argentina, Brazil, United States and Japan and was also awarded important national and international awards. His music is published by Babel Scores (France) and Donemus (Netherlands).
