Abstract

This article investigates the use of microgenesis in the construction and interpretation of data in studies of musical improvisation, drawing on a previous doctoral study (Monzo, 2022). It discusses the methodological relevance of this approach for tracing and interpreting creative processes in the course of improvisation. The study used as a reference was qualitative and idiographic and was grounded in cultural models of human development and creativity. Musicians’ verbal reports following improvisational performances were analyzed through microgenesis. The discussion highlights the methodological possibilities of this approach for (1) examining individual and collective actions; (2) tracing ongoing interactions; (3) identifying intersubjective processes; (4) considering sociocultural aspects of the improvisational context; (5) analyzing forms of expression in performance; and (6) observing the temporal organization of actions. It is concluded that microgenesis provides methodological resources for the process-oriented investigation of creativity in musical improvisation.
