Inscription of the self: Foucauldian notions on the body-artifact

Abstract

This paper investigates how body modifications, such as tattoos and plastic surgeries, as a form of cultural expression, or "inscriptions of the self". The theoretical reference chosen is the biopolitics by the french philosopher Michel Foucault. On the methodology used, the research is characterized as exploratory and bibliographic. The results obtained allow us to map how the structures of know-power exert noticeable influence over the body. We explore, through the results, the complexity of the "inscriptions of the self", questioning the factors that lead to certain practices for being used in the fields of health, cosmetics and marginalizing then.

Anderson Barcelos Martins, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

Ph.D. candidate and Master's (2023) in Education from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGEDU, UFRGS). Specialist in Educational Guidance (2017) and Educational Management (2021) from La Salle University (UNILASALLE). Post-Graduate in Neuroscience Applied to the Learning Process from the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (UNISINOS, 2018). Bachelor's and Licentiate in Philosophy from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS, 2014). Researcher at the Center for Studies on Curriculum, Culture and Society of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - NECCSO/UFRGS (CNPq) and the Study Group in Education, Interdisciplinarity and Technologies - GEEDINTEC/UFRGS (CNPq). Works at the Pro-Rectorate of Undergraduate and Continuing Education (PROGRAD) of PUCRS. Interested in interdisciplinary investigations in the field of Education, from a post-structuralist perspective, particularly encompassing the themes of body, non-suicidal self-injury, subjectivities, mental health, media manifestations, digital technologies, and social networks.

Licentiate in History (UFRGS). She is a member of the Study Group in Education, Interdisciplinarity and Technologies (GE-EDINTEC/UFRGS-CNPq).

Andresa Silva da Costa Mutz, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, linked to the Interdisciplinary Department (UFRGS/CLN), where she teaches both in-person undergraduate courses and distance learning (EaD) courses. She serves as a permanent faculty member in the Cultural Studies in Education research line of the Graduate Program in Education (PPGEDU/UFRGS). She holds a Ph.D. (UFRGS) and a Master's (ULBRA) in Education in the Cultural Studies in Education line. She is a Licentiate in History (UNISINOS). She leads the Study Group in Education, Interdisciplinarity and Technologies - GEEDINTEC/UFRGS (CNPq) and the Center for Studies on Curriculum, Culture and Society of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - NECCSO/UFRGS (CNPq) and is a member of the Study Group in Education, Culture, Environment and Philosophy of the Federal University of Rio Grande - GEECAF/FURG (CNPq). She served as an Associate Professor at FURG (2014-2018), in undergraduate and graduate programs in Education, where she supervised Master's theses in the Cultural Studies in Education research line. She acted as an EVALUATOR FOR THE NATIONAL TEXTBOOK PROGRAM (2023) - Object 1 - Elementary Education. Research interests: Education, Discourse, Cultural Artifacts, Work and Teaching Identities in Digital Culture. Problematizes the marks of Digital Culture in contemporary life through the analysis of the relationships between discourse and subject production, with a special interest in representations and identity processes related to teaching in various media "places": magazines, newspapers, blogs, social networks, digital platforms.
