The conception of the baby as a protagonist of their own development and as a holder of communicative abilities is not yet a consensus within the scientific field. From this context, the aim of this study is to analyze, through an integrative review, how the sound-vocal productions of babies under 24 months have been presented in the scientific literature over the past five years. The review considered the period between
2020 and July 2025 in the PubMed, SciELO, APA PsycInfo, and Cairn databases, using the terms “baby” and “vocalizations.” Initially, 558 articles were identified, of which 45 met the inclusion criteria and composed the final scope of the review. A predominance of publications from North American institutions written in English was observed, with a higher concentration of observational and longitudinal studies. Based on the analysis of the texts, the articles were organized into two thematic categories, considering their objectives and methodological characteristics: (1) characteristics of sound-vocal production and (2) socio-environmental context. The results indicate that, for the most part, babies’ sound-vocal productions are still understood as precursors to speech. Although some studies recognize the infant as an active participant in the communicative process, approaches that legitimize these productions as language endowed with its own expressivity remain limited. It is concluded that this topic requires theoretical and methodological advances that support the infant as a protagonist in communicative processes.
