Abstract

This research delved into the effects of group music therapy on the readiness for change in men diagnosed with Substance Use Disorders (SUD). A quantitative approach was employed in a controlled investigation. The control group engaged in music listening activities and demonstrated a higher readiness for change compared to the intervention group, which underwent structured music therapy. Conversely, the intervention group exhibited significant correlations between the perceived impacts of music therapy and the stages of contemplation and readiness for change, suggesting a positive influence of music therapy on these variables, particularly in the contemplation stage. The results also indicated that the impact of music therapy became more pronounced as the sessions progressed, notably evident after approximately one month of intervention. These findings imply the potential of group music therapy as an effective approach to bolster readiness for change in patients with SUD. However, it is crucial to note that the sample size was limited, potentially influencing the results. Thus, future studies with larger samples can offer additional insights into the efficacy of music therapy in SUD treatment and its correlation with readiness for change.
