Introduction: Conceptions about childhood and especially adolescence as a time of deficit have not yet been overcome in the literature on young people. Although it is important to continue addressing the demands related to problems and risks that involve them, theoretical conceptions with epistemological and methodological implications for this paradigm shift arise. Method: This article aims to present some theoretical conceptions in contemporary scientific production on the concept of “Positive Youth Development”, through a narrative review of the construct. Results: The term is approached from the Relational Developmental Systems Theory and as part of a movement initiated in positive psychology which presents a paradigm with an emphasis on forces for development. We highlight programs with this focus and approaches that provide for both individual resources and specific contexts for positive development, such as the “6Cs” approach. Conclusion: It is proposed that the delimitation of the concept can support research and practices that promote the positive development of young Brazilians in different areas that work with youth development.
