Abstract

This article presents preliminary findings from a postdoctoral project in Musicology conducted at the University of São Paulo, focusing on research methodologies in music with an emphasis on Artistic Research. The study details the initial phase of the project, which involves identifying and analyzing theses and dissertations from Brazilian public universities, produced between 2018 and 2022, that include the term “Artistic Research” in their titles, abstracts, or keywords. This text not only lists the identified works and their fundamental bibliographic information, but also discusses the bibliographic review that underpins the ongoing research. Among the main findings, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of works focused on Artistic Research in Brazilian universities, although this growth is uneven and more pronounced in master’s dissertations. The analysis further reveals a diversity in the methods and theoretical frameworks adopted, reflecting a varied and heterogeneous approach in this emerging field of study.

Author Biographies

Marta Macedo Brietzke, Universidade de São Paulo

Cellist and independent music teacher (cello). Graduated in Music from UFRGS, Master and PhD in Arts (Music) from USP, under the supervision of Professors Fabio Soren Presgrave and Mário André Wanderley Oliveira. Since July 2024, she has been the coordinator of the Cello Pedagogy Working Group of the Brazilian Association of Cellists (ABRACELLO). She is currently a post-doctorate student in Music at USP under the supervision of Professor Mário Videira.

Mario Videira, Universidade de São Paulo

Full Professor of Musical Aesthetics (2019) at ECA/USP. He holds a degree in Music (2001) and Philosophy (2008) from USP, a master's degree in Musicology (2004) from UNESP, a PhD in Philosophy (2009) from USP and a post-doctorate in Musicology from the University of Oviedo (2025). He published the book O Romantismo e o Belo Musical (2006), published by Editora Unesp. As a DAAD/CNPq scholarship holder, he completed a research internship at Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen (Germany). He published the first translation into Portuguese of the book Berg: o mestre da transição mínima, by the German philosopher Theodor W. Adorno (Ed. Unesp). He is currently Vice-Director of the School of Communications and Arts (2025-2029).
