Abstract

This paper investigates the field of Artistic Research (AR), which, although growing, faces difficulties in terms of its definitions. Based on some criticisms of the field, the aim of this research is to identify the marks that define AR as a distinct research territory. To this end, Frayling's (1993) typology will be used, understanding that the different understandings of AR are associated with the “research through the arts”. Based on this, and in dialogue with Chiantore (2020), three hallmarks of AR are exposed: the feedback between academic research and artistic practice, the intentionality of proposing itself as research and the particularity of its results. Finally, a structure for AR projects is proposed based on Stévance and Lacasse (2018). The path taken aims to facilitate the approach of interested researchers to the area, as well as highlighting its idiosyncrasies and, as a result, justifying and defending its existence.
