The Discorso della Voce (1562), by physician and musician Camillo Maffei, consists of a letter dedicated to his employer Giovanni di Capua. The central objective of the letter is to discuss the singing of passaggi in the absence of a voice teacher. Although this is a unique document—rich in information on voice physiology and ideals of style —there are few works that have exclusively investigated the Discorso, with the present study being the first in Brazil. In addition to providing a translation of significant excerpts from the document, this article discusses Maffei’s thoughts regarding the nature of the voice and singing practice at the end of Italian Renaissance. The treatise’s information has been interpreted based on the traditions of courtliness and rhetorical art concerning the voice, additional writings on passaggi from this period, and Classical and Renaissance concepts of the vocal apparatus.
