The objective of this article is to analyze the use of epistemic and deontic modalities in medication leaflets before and after the legal requirement for patient leaflets (RDC 47/2009). The corpus is made up of leaflets that were published before and after the resolution that required a change in the compositional construction of texts of this genre. For the theoretical foundation, we use the concept of discursive genre proposed by the Bakhtin Circle and Bronckart's proposal for the study of modalizations, from the perspective of socio-discursive Interactionism (ISD) of text analysis. Methodologically, it is a qualitative-quantitative and interpretive research, of a documentary nature. The results demonstrate that the epistemic modality was predominant in items related to drug safety before and after the implementation of the requirement, while the deontic modality prevailed for information that guides use, in the two periods analyzed. This study, within its limits, shows the need to learn more about a discursive genre with significant relevance to health care.
