This article aims to understand the lived experience of therapeutic music composition within a music therapy group of older adults. This phenomenological study was conducted with twelve participants aged 60 years and older, who attended twelve weekly 60-minute music therapy sessions. Beginning in the sixth session, a process of therapeutic music composition was introduced and subsequently explored throughout the study. Data was collected through audio recordings and transcriptions of the sessions, as well as field diary entries. The analysis was grounded in procedures of reduction and interpretation of experiences expressed through verbal and musical-sonic interactions. Repeated readings of the transcriptions and field notes allowed significant narratives to emerge, offering insights into the participants’ experiential process. The analytical path was guided by the search for an in-depth understanding of the experience of music composition. The article presents a visual representation of the process as lived by the participants, which revealed a nonlinear dynamic characterized by movements of progression, return, and reworking. Analysis of the final composition uncovered themes related to independence, retirement, ageism, and personal development. The study discusses therapeutic music composition as a strategy for health promotion and social expression in music therapy, contributing to the advancement of practices that support the collective construction of meaning around aging.
