Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze Ruggiero Ricci's contributions on left-hand violin technique. Elements to substantiate his view on the role of aural perception in technical development and on the relationship between the way of holding the violin and basic technical expedients are presented. Ricci's contributions are compared to those of other violin pedagogues, especially Carl Flesch and Ivan Galamian, the most influential authors in this area in the 20th century. The relationship between acquisition of left-hand technique in the strict sense of motor/postural performance and the development of auditory ability to differentiate pitches, a relationship that holds a privileged place in Ricci's propositions, as well as other structuring elements of his perspective on left-hand technique – especially the chordal approach and the use of the glissando technique – are discussed based on postulates of cultural-historical psychology.
