Abstract

This research aimed to investigate how pianists at the postgraduate level understand, explain and produce different piano timbres in works from the 20th and 21st centuries. The first of two studies comprised the participation of two pianists playing the same passage of Vers la flamme by A. Scriabin (c. 1-40). After a preliminary analysis, the amount of study time required for achieving mastery to produce an intended set of timbres became a relevant part of a hypothesis regarding practice and performance. Therefore, the second study underwent adjustments on sampling for participants and repertoires. The second study included three postgraduate pianists who were at the final stages of preparing recitals. In conclusion, the production of timbres in the instrument seems to result from an intricate array of performance parameters, metaphorical thoughts and images as well as the realization of different piano touches and body gestures.
