The Waldstein Gesture and the Tetradic Space

Abstract

This article is based on the concept of rhetorical functional gestures (Almada, 2025), associated with the Schema Theory and the harmonic practice of popular music. This framework provides the means for the descriptions of the Waldstein gesture, whose designation derives from its model, extracted from the opening bars of Beethoven's piano sonata, Op. 53. After identifying its constructive characteristics and making the necessary adaptations to the peculiar conditions of the popular musical repertoire, the Waldstein gesture is plotted as a directed graph in Tetradic Space, a chordal space specially designed for the identification and qualification of harmonic relationships between asymmetrical seventh chords. Excerpts from five pieces from the popular musical repertoire that employ the aforementioned gesture are analyzed in the final section of the article, followed by a comparative discussion, which allows us to identify the characteristic elements of such a compositional strategy.

Carlos Almada, UFRJ

Carlos Almada is a composer with a master's and doctorate in Music from Unirio. He is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Music of UFRJ and a permanent member of the Postgraduate Program in Music at the same institution, where he coordinates a research project on systematic studies in popular music. He is the author of the books "Arranjo" (Unicamp Press, 2001), "A estrutura do choro" (Da Fonseca, 2006), "Harmonia funcional" (Unicamp Press, 2009), "Contraponto em música popular" (UFRJ Press, 2013), "Nas fronteiras da fenômeno" (Prisma, 2016), "A harmonia de Jobim" (Unicamp Press, 2022), "A melodia de Jobim" (Unicamp Press, 2023), "Musical Variation: Toward a Transformational Perspective" (Springer, 2023), and "Funcionalidade harmônica em música popular: uma proposta teórica" (Unicamp Press, 2025), and has also published numerous articles in journals and proceedings of national and international conferences. A CNPq PQ2 Productivity Fellow, Almada is a member of the Brazilian Association of Musical Theory and Analysis, leader of the MusMat research group, and coordinator of the MPB Project (www.projetompb.com.br).
