“Ayisyen kite lakay”: an introduction to the music of the Haitian diaspora in Brazil

Amongst the myriad sociocultural consequences of the development of a Haitian diaspora in Brazil is a rich and diverse musical production. A marginalized and as of yet little-studied musical context, the musical activities and production of Haitians in the country has revealed itself to be a cosmopolitan and varied phenomenon, besides intimately related to the experience of migration and adaptation to a new environment. Establishing a dialogue with the anthropological and ethnomusicological literature about diasporic Haitian contexts and reflections about diaspora and migration by the Jamaican cultural theorist Stuart Hall, this paper offers a panoramic view and initial discussion of such musical context, whose development is negatively affected by the intersection of racism and xenophobia. Through such framework, I reflect on how the musical production of my interlocutors brings to the fore issues and concepts linked to mobility, cultural identity, race/racism, and gender inequality.
