Abstract

This article examines the use of textile elements in the artwork of the artist Claudia Lara, understanding them as poetic devices that engage questions of belonging, memory, and identity, with particular emphasis on the ancestry of Black women. By incorporating fabrics and threads into her poetics, the artist re-signifies materials historically confined to the domestic sphere and associated with the women in her Family – women skilled in needlework yet denied access to formal education. Through the use of these elements in her artistic practice, Lara seeks to reinscribe these women within the expanded experience of art, proposing new gender and racial relations through family photographs and memories. Considering her poetic trajectory, this article draws on race and gender studies and, based on historical documents and interviews, analyzes the place of textile art within the field of contemporary art, problematizing its historical devaluation – intimately linked to the naturalization of ideas of the “feminine”.

Angela Patricia Niespodzinski, Universidade Estadual do Paraná – Campus Curitiba II

Angela Patricia Niespodzinski é artista visual, pesquisadora. Graduada em Artes Visuais pela Universidade Estadual do Paraná (UNESPAR), cursa atualmente o Mestrado em Artes na mesma instituição, onde desenvolve a pesquisa A arte têxtil de Claudia Lara: retomando o fio do pertencimento”, sob orientação de Artur Freitas. Seu trabalho transita entre arte têxtil, feminismo e história da arte, utilizando o bordado como prática crítica e poética para questionar opressões e violências estruturais.
