This article aims to understand how a group of students produced the report of a Modelling project based on a script, how this script was interpreted by the students and how it guided the students’ actions in relation to this task. The script is understood as an artifact that is recognized by students as the parameter for what will be evaluated by the teacher, explaining the tension between the proposal of Modelling learning environments and school Mathematics Education. The research subjects are 3rd Year class students from the Integrated Technical course to High School in Environment, at the Federal Institute of Minas Gerais, Governador Valadares campus. This study is based on the Historical-Cultural Activity Theory. The data discussed in this article are qualitative in nature and they are from participant observations. The study is based on the Historical-Cultural Activity Theory. From data analysis, it was possible to understand that the artifact nature may make the historically constructed power relations prevail over the school Mathematics Education, among these relations the power exercised by evaluations in Mathematics.
