Conflict of Interest Policy

The scientific Journal Educação e Linguagens adopts the following principles and procedures for identifying, disclosing, and managing conflicts of interest to ensure the integrity and transparency of the editorial process.

Definition and Scope

A conflict of interest is understood as any relationship—personal, professional, financial, academic, or political—that may influence the impartiality of authors, editors, or reviewers in the preparation, evaluation, or publication of manuscripts. Such situations include, but are not limited to:

  • Employment, consultancy, or stock ownership in organizations related to the research topic.

  • Funding from public or private agencies with an interest in the results.

  • Personal or academic relationships that may compromise neutrality.

Responsibilities of the Parties Involved

Authors

Authors must:

  • Complete the Conflict of Interest Declaration during submission, listing: sources of research funding; professional or personal relationships with institutions, companies, or individuals connected to the study; any other circumstances that could be perceived as influencing the results or analysis.

  • Update the declaration if new conflicts arise during the editorial process.

Reviewers

Reviewers must:

  • Declare, upon accepting the evaluation assignment, the absence of any conflicts of interest related to the manuscript.

  • Refrain from evaluating works in which they identify: authorship by institutional colleagues, recent supervisors, or supervisees (last 5 years); participation in competitive projects or ongoing collaborations; any relationship that compromises the confidentiality or impartiality of the evaluation.

  • Immediately notify the editorial team if they identify a conflict after beginning the evaluation.

Editors and Editorial Board

Editor and member of the editorial board must:

  • Refrain from participating in decisions regarding manuscripts with which they have a conflict.

  • Disclose annually any institutional, financial, or professional relationships that may affect their activities in the journal.

External Guidelines and Transparency

The journal aligns with the norms of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), adopting the following principles:

  • Public Disclosure: All conflict of interest statements will be published alongside the accepted manuscript.

  • Standardization: The ICMJE form Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest will be used for information collection.

Management Procedures

  • Initial Analysis: The Editor-in-Chief will verify the statements submitted by authors, reviewers, and editors.
  • Corrective Measures: In cases of an identified conflict, the journal may: assign new reviewers; exclude involved editors from the decision-making process; request additional clarifications from the parties involved.
  • Sanctions: Non-compliance with this policy will result in: immediate archiving of manuscripts with incorrect or omitted declarations.
