Resumen

This article is written by a composer on his own music. It describes a set of rhythmic organization principles used in my compositional research since 1989. These principles greately expand what is traditionally known as "modal rhythm" , which appears for the first time in the music of the 12th century polyphonists of the Notre Dame School: Leoninus and Perotinus. For this reason, I call this group of rhythmic principles "expanded modal rhythm" . They are a part of a larger context of temporal organization principles designed to generating ametric textures, complex polyrhythm and cross rhythms, and certain desired types or rhythmic flow. I use examples taken from four of my compositions.

Luigi Antonio Irlandini, Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina

Composer and performer (piano and shakuhachi), born in Rio de Janeiro, is a professor at UDESC since 2010. Works recently in evidence are Peace, my Heart, for choir a cappella, on a poem by Rabindranath Tagore (Prêmio Funarte de 2016), Thirteen Moons on Turtle's Back, for piano and violoncello, premiered at the 22º Rio International Cello Encounter in 2016, and Phoînix (from the series Bestiarium, vol. 1): the chamber version was premiered at the 50º Festival Música Nova Gilberto Mendes in 2016, and the original orchestral version at the Festival Tinta Fresca, in Belo Horizonte, 2012. Irlandini received his Ph.D. in Composition from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he also worked in post-doctoral research in computer music at the Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology (CREATE, UCSB).
