Abstract

This article explores the BatuCantada collective, the first carnival bloco and percussion group exclusively formed by women in Pelotas (RS), highlighting its role as a space of resistance and female empowerment. The group promotes the inclusion of women in percussion and values Afro-Brazilian culture, particularly through the tambor de Sopapo, a symbol of resistance of the Black community in southern Rio Grande do Sul (Batista, 2021; Maia, 2008). By addressing the dynamics of musical patriarchy, which marginalizes and objectifies women in music (Camargo, 2020; Green, 2001), the article examines how BatuCantada contributes to the fight for gender equity, advocating for the recognition of women in percussion. The collective also strengthens female empowerment and that of the LGBTQIAPN+ community through workshops, events, and partnerships with samba schools, expanding opportunities and visibility for women in the musical and cultural contexts.
