Abstract

In this paper, we analyse the application of mimetic resources in the compositional processes of the works Doppelbelichtung (2016) and Zugvögel (2012) by German composer Carola Bauckholt. These compositions illustrate the direct association Bauckholt establishes between the sonic characteristics of musical instruments and the sounds to be imitated, specifically bird songs and the bird calls. In Doppelbelichtung, the composer uses the higher registers of the violin to imitate bird songs, while in Zugvögel, she associates reed instruments with the sounds of migratory birds. We conducted a descriptive analysis of the use of birds’ sound material to understand Bauckholt's compositional procedures, as well as her creative solutions to the challenge of instrumental mimesis.
