Abstract

The opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764), composed over a libretto by Louis Fuzelier (1672-1752), is a notorious example of the music’s role in the process of symbolic production of otherness that accompanied the establishment of Western hegemony in the Early Modern Period. Crossing critical and musicological studies on the opera, especially on its last part, Les Sauvages, we propose an analysis based on aspects of its composition, its libretto, its textual references, and its reception, taking into consideration the proposal enunciated by the historian Dipesh Chakrabarty of provincialization of Europe. We argue that elements intrinsic to the composition and elements of the most recent production of the opera – in 2019 at the Opéra national de Paris – Opéra Bastille, France – produce noise in the Eurocentric discourse, exposing and subverting to some extent the colonizing strategies of producing otherness.
