Abstract

This article investigates how visual metaphors and mental imagery affect piano performance, emphasising their pedagogical and expressive roles. Adopting a qualitative, theoretical-reflective approach, it weaves together musical pedagogy, embodied cognition, neuroscience, and aesthetics. A literature review and analysis of pedagogical reports reveal how metaphors shape technique, expressivity, and interpretative construction in piano teaching. Findings show that these images mediate language, gesture, and imagination, fostering more integrated and artistic learning. Consciously employing them enhances motor coordination, memorisation, emotional expressivity, and interpretative autonomy. Stimulating imagination through visualisation is therefore a valuable resource that should be embedded in pianistic practice and pedagogy.
