A problematization is presented regarding the teaching of literary literature in school contexts, taking as a starting point the film “El suplente” (The substitute), from 2022, directed by Diego Lerman. For this, relevant bibliographies are used, especially the teaching of literature. The central question of the film asked by professor Lucio (played by Juan Minujín), which is, “What is literature for?”, is taken as a base for problematization, to problematize one of the main teaching challenges for teaching literature for certain sectors of students, whose attitudes can be summarized in a kind of recurring catchphrase among members of this segment: what is this content for? Based on notes from Antonio Candido and Nuccio Ordine, the question “what is literature for?” can give rise to a significant variety of positions, the validity of which will depend, among other factors, on the conceptions of literature, education and the world, both of those who ask and those who respond to this question.
