The objective of this work is to report an experience through exploration and problem solving for the construction of the volume concept carried out by students from the 6th and 7th of elementary school. The methodological path of this work followed the guidelines of design research, which is a type of qualitative methodology, and which includes three phases of an investigation in the teaching experience modality: the preparation of the experience, the experimentation in the classroom and the retrospective analysis. For this, we developed a teaching proposal through the exploration and resolution of problems about the volume content of the prism and the cylinder. The theoretical framework adopted brings discussions about problem solving and its importance in mathematics teaching, as well as about the construction of concepts. The results showed that the students who participated in the teaching experiment showed understanding of the concept of volume, as well as being motivated to participate in the activities.
