In this experience report, an activity developed with students of a lato sensu graduate course is presented, under the light of Mathematical Modeling (MM), according to the perspective of Biembengut (2016). The purpose of this investigative activity in the context of a sport practice (futsal) was to produce data that culminated in the creation of a mathematical model that met the problem situation: what will be the maximum height that a ball would reach to cover the goalkeeper and go straight to the goal? The modeling activity was developed with five masters, at a public university in the state of Bahia. The data collection instruments used were questionnaires, a field diary and data on the material's production by those involved. The results point to the development of autonomy, due to the effort in the search for knowledge. In addition, the interdisciplinary, innovative and investigative aspect that the activity based on MM provided, mainly because it brought together, in the same educational environment, the theoretical and empirical dimensions, in favor of the construction of mathematized knowledge through a sports practice in the daily life of Basic Education students.
