VIDA MARIA AND THE TEACHING OF MATHEMATICS: SOME REFLECTIONS

Abstract

This text explains a qualitative understanding of the teaching of Mathematics that emerged from the discussion of the short film Vida Maria. In order to seek such understanding, we assume a hermeneutic phenomenological stance and allow ourselves to be led by the question: What is shown in the dialogue carried out when relating the teaching of Mathematics and the short film Vida Maria? By entering into what was said by the significant subjects, mostly teachers, the analysis movement allowed us to arrive at two cores of ideas: perpetuation of the teaching of mathematics and the movement to make ruptures and changes in the teaching of mathematics, when interpreted revealed to us that few changes occurred in relation to the teaching of mathematics, since it is now evident that a tradition is rooted in the way of teaching this science. Other aspects evidenced refer to the search for the “way of teaching”, the valorization of the change process and the importance of a collective for the changes to happen.
