Abstract

This article presents the results of an action research project carried out in a Multifunctional Resource Room (MRR) at a municipal public school in northwestern Paraná, whose objective was to analyze pedagogical mediations in teaching the concept of numbers to students with intellectual disabilities. Based on Inclusive Mathematics Education and Historical-Cultural Theory, the study adopted a qualitative approach, with the participation of two students in the early years of elementary school who attended after-school classes. Data were produced through systematically planned pedagogical interventions, using cultural instruments and manipulatives, recorded in a field diary, and analyzed using Thematic Analysis. The results show that the intentional organization of teaching, anchored in teacher mediation and the mobilization of signs and instruments, enhanced advances in the understanding of the structural elements of the concept of number—counting, cardinality, and place value in the decimal number system. The analyses reinforce that the mathematical learning of students with intellectual disabilities should not be understood as a linear consequence of their organic condition, but as a phenomenon historically constituted in social relations and in the pedagogical conditions offered.
