Lesson Study for non-japanese
is jugyo kenkyu possible outside Japan?

Teaching is a cultural activity, and as such, it is governed by mental frameworks that shape behaviors. Jugyo Kenkyu, or Lesson Study, as it is known worldwide, is part of the Japanese educational system aimed at improving the teaching of primary school teachers and has been implemented in other cultures. Given the complexity and Japanese cultural bases of Jugyo Kenkyu, it is essential to identify approaches, distances, and obstacles when applying them in non-Japanese school spheres, as reported by Japanese educators and researchers and materialized in a systematic review called Snowballing. The review was based on eight scientific works, filtered by descriptors and inclusion criteria designed in a protocol, whose main results pointed to the use of the planning-implementation-reflection cycle (approximation); treating Lesson Study as a workshop, disregarding long-term objectives, focusing on the teacher and not on teaching (distancing); lack of administrative and governmental support (obstacle).
