Editorial Policies

Open Science Policy

The Journal Educação e Linguagens (Education and Languages) is an online open access scientific journal, providing immediate and free access to its content. It is founded on the principles of Open Science, which aim to expand the transparency, accessibility, and democratization of scientific knowledge. The journal adopts the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license, allowing the sharing, adaptation, and use of published content, provided the source is properly cited. It optionally encourages the availability of research data, materials, and methodological protocols supporting the results presented in articles, in trusted repositories, when applicable and in compliance with ethical and legal principles. The journal's editorial practices are aligned with the principles of transparency, scientific integrity, and responsibility in the use and communication of research.

Editorial Process Policy

The Journal Educação e Linguagens adopts editorial procedures based on the principles of integrity, academic quality, confidentiality, and transparency, from submission to the final editorial decision. The editorial process follows a structured sequence of stages, from submission to final publication, aiming to ensure the quality and academic rigor of published works.

  • Initial Editorial Screening (2 weeks): After receiving a submission, the editorial team conducts a preliminary analysis. At this stage, it verifies the manuscript's suitability regarding the journal's scope and policies, compliance with author guidelines, and thematic relevance. Works that do not meet these fundamental criteria may be rejected without proceeding to peer review.

  • Assignment of Reviewers (2 weeks): For manuscripts that pass the initial screening, the editors identify and invite, based on their expertise and field, at least two ad hoc reviewers to conduct the peer review. The invitation considers the necessary expertise for a critical and well-founded analysis of the work.

  • Peer Review Period (12 weeks): The assigned reviewers analyze the manuscript in detail, following the criteria established by the journal, such as originality, methodological rigor, theoretical consistency, and clarity in presenting results. They provide reasoned reports with recommendations for the editors.

  • Editorial Decision (2 weeks): Based on the reviewers' reports and their own assessment, the editorial team issues a final decision. Possible decisions are: acceptance, acceptance conditional on mandatory revisions, request for a new submission after substantial revisions, or rejection. The communication is sent to the corresponding author.

  • Revision by Authors (3 weeks): If modifications are required, authors receive the reports and editorial instructions to prepare a revised version of the manuscript and a detailed point-by-point response letter. This material is resubmitted for new consideration by the editors and, when pertinent, by the original reviewers.

  • Preparation for Publication (3 weeks): After final acceptance, the manuscript is sent to the copyediting phase. In this final stage, formatting and style adjustments are made according to the journal's standards, the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is assigned, and the layout is finalized, preparing it for publication in the next issue.

At most 20% (twenty percent) of the articles published in each issue may have authorship affiliated with the institution that maintains/publishes the journal. In cases where the manuscript includes both internal and external authors (co-authorship), the article will be classified as an internal article solely for the purpose of calculating endogeneity, as it maintains an institutional link with the publishing institution.

Submission Frequency Policy

The publication of more than one article, interview, or review by the same author, individually or in co-authorship, is not allowed within a minimum interval of one year.

Evaluation Policy

Revista Educação e Linguagens adopts the Double Blind Peer Review model. This system ensures scientific integrity and meritocracy, as the identities of both authors and reviewers remain strictly confidential throughout the process. Our pool of reviewers consists exclusively of experts with recognized competence in their respective fields. The selection of reviewers prioritizes researchers external to the publishing institution, ensuring an in-depth analysis and a pluralistic perspective on the originality and methodological rigor of each manuscript.

The reviewer acts as a critical consultant to the editorial board. Their role extends beyond acceptance or rejection: they must provide technical insights that enhance the quality of the manuscript. We do not expect each item to be answered with a simple "yes" or "no"; it is a guide to assist the evaluation, not a substitute for the written report itself.

Reviewer Guidelines:

  1. Is the topic relevant for investigation?

  2. Does the title reflect the content of the article?

  3. Does the abstract meet the standards and properly present the necessary elements?

  4. Are the keywords appropriate?

  5. Are the objectives, theoretical framework, and methodology consistent?

  6. Is the discussion relevant, sufficient, and appropriate? Is it linked to the literature review?

  7. Is there a need for additions or further development? Is there a need for reductions?

  8. Do the citations comply with the author-date system?

  9. Are all listed references cited in the body of the text?

  10. Is the quality of writing (grammar and language standards) satisfactory and in line with academic-scientific standards?

Peer review by individuals with personal, professional, or financial ties to the authors is strictly prohibited. Manuscript content is the intellectual property of the authors and cannot be shared prior to official publication.

Protocol and Editorial Workflow:

  • Submission via OJS: The entire process takes place within the Open Journal Systems, ensuring a historical record of every stage.

  • Quality of Dialogue: Comments must be specific and respectful, avoiding generic terms.

  • Tie-breaking Vote: In the event of a disagreement (one favorable and one unfavorable report), the journal will appoint a third reviewer to reach a final decision, ensuring a fair judgment.

Should reviewers have any questions, they should contact the Editorial Team.

Ethics and Best Practices Policy

The ethics and best practices policy in the production and publication of the Journal Educação e Linguagens must consider:

Conflict of Interest Policy

The Journal Educação e Linguagens adopts policies for identifying, disclosing, and managing conflicts of interest, ensuring the integrity and impartiality of the editorial process. Conflicts of interest are considered any personal, professional, academic, financial, or institutional relationships that could influence, or be perceived as influential, in the preparation, evaluation, or publication of manuscripts. Authors, reviewers, and editors must declare conflicts at the time of submission, evaluation, or editorial decision. Authors' declarations will be published alongside accepted articles. Non-compliance may result in the replacement of reviewers, exclusion of editors from the decision-making process, or archiving of the manuscript.

Policy for Research Involving Human Subjects

Research involving human subjects must strictly observe the ethical guidelines established by the Brazilian National Health Council. Authors must present the approval opinion from the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) and prove compliance of their studies with the following regulations:

  • CNS Resolution 466/2012 - Ethical guidelines for research with human beings;

  • CNS Resolution 510/2016 - Specific norms for research in Human and Social Sciences.

Manuscripts that do not meet these requirements will be automatically rejected.

Policies for the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Journal Educação e Linguagens recognizes the potential of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools as academic support but establishes guidelines to ensure integrity, transparency, and ethics in published research, in accordance with the Guide for the use of AI tools in the SciELO Network (SciELO, 2023).

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools is permitted for authors as support in activities such as writing, translation, formatting, image creation, or data analysis, provided it is explicitly declared. Declarations should indicate: methodology: when AI contributed to generating results; acknowledgments: when AI assisted in writing or textual revision; specific declaration: during the submission process, detailing the tool and purpose. AI cannot be listed as an author; responsibility for the originality, truthfulness, and integrity of the content lies exclusively with the human authors. Editors and reviewers may use AI only for internal operational support, such as manuscript screening or similarity verification; its use for writing reviews or editorial decisions is prohibited. Readers may use AI for analysis or interpretation of published content, provided proper citation and integrity of the work are respected. The use of AI for the following is strictly prohibited: data falsification, production of unverifiable or fraudulent content.

The policy will be periodically reviewed by the Editorial Board, aligned with COPE, SciELO, and ABC (Brazilian Academy of Sciences) guidelines, ensuring updates in response to the evolution of AI technologies.

Similarity Verification Policy

To ensure the originality and authenticity of works, the Journal Educação e Linguagens uses the CopySpider software on all submitted manuscripts. If evidence of plagiarism or self-plagiarism above the acceptable limit is identified, the manuscript will be rejected. If detection occurs after publication, the Editorial Committee will evaluate the case and, if the irregularity is confirmed, the article will be removed from the journal, and applicable disciplinary measures may be applied.

Copyright Policy

Authors who publish in the Journal Educação e Linguagens retain the copyright of their works. By submitting the manuscript, they grant the journal the right of first publication under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) License. This license allows the work to be shared, adapted, and used by third parties, provided that credit is given to the author and the original publication, with an indication of the license and any changes.

Privacy Policy

The Journal Educação e Linguagens ensures that all registration and contact information provided by authors, reviewers, and other collaborators will be used exclusively for editorial and communication purposes related to the journal, maintaining absolute confidentiality and not being shared with third parties.

Confidentiality Policy

By submitting manuscripts (articles, reviews, interviews, or special issues), authors assume the ethical commitment that the work is original and exclusive, refraining from sending it to other journals while it remains under evaluation and until the final editorial decision.

Correction, Retraction and Withdrawal Policy

The Journal Educação e Linguagens adopts clear policies for correction, retraction, and withdrawal of texts, aiming to guarantee the integrity of published knowledge, in accordance with international best editorial practices.

  • Sanctions for Plagiarism and Misconduct: Manuscripts are checked for similarity. Before publication, works with more than 40% similarity are analyzed; confirmed plagiarism results in immediate rejection. After publication, confirmed cases may lead to withdrawal of the article, publication of a retraction, and suspension of the author from future submissions, according to the decision of the Editorial Board.

  • Correction (Errata): Corrections are published for errors that do not compromise the conclusions, such as failures in analysis, results, citations, references, or methodology. They can be made: by the author: notification signed by all co-authors; by the editor: errors introduced during editing; addendum: relevant additional information, decided by the Editorial Board.

  • Retraction: Applied to serious errors that invalidate conclusions or involve scientific misconduct, such as data falsification, plagiarism, authorship abuses, omission of data, non-declaration of AI use, or false authorship claims. Ideally initiated by the authors, with the signature of all co-authors; in case of disagreement, the decision lies with the Editorial Board.

  • Withdrawal: Extreme measure applied in serious cases, such as post-publication plagiarism or misconduct, court orders, or ethical violations that compromise the validity of the work. The text is removed and replaced by a withdrawal notice, informing the reasons for the decision.

Procedure: The text is removed and replaced by a withdrawal notice, with justification for the decision.
