It is analyzed literary productions that focus on reading, writing, revision and rewriting of deaf students to verify the process of appropriation of the linguistic system of the written Portuguese. We question: Are deaf students able to appropriate the language system of Portuguese with the current teaching practices? A systematic review of the literature was conducted in the databases of the Scientific Electronic Library Online and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. With the descriptors "reading", "writing", and "deaf", 185 publications were identified, with a final sample of 13 studies. Results: i) deaf people with gaps in mother tongue and written Portuguese; ii) lack of review and rewriting practices of texts; iii) absence of proposals for reading/writing as pedagogical work, which allows the deaf, the construction of meaning in written discourses.
