Abstract

Ana Carolina is a Brazilian cineaste who started her career by directing documentaries during the 1960s. In 1977, she directed her first full lenght fictional feature, Mar de Rosas, which forms a trilogy with other films she conducted shortly after: Das Tripas Coração (1982) and Sonho de Valsa (1987). The present study proposes an analysis of the films Mar de Rosas (1977) and Sonho de Valsa (1987) under the perspective of family relationships and marriage. In Ana Carolina’s cinema, these institutions – family and marriage – are characterized by frictions, breakups and disintegration. From this breakage, the movies in question are related with the themes mentioned before not only in the narrative sphere, but also in the creative and filmic processes of the cineast.
