Abstract

In this work factors that influenced retention in Calculus I were analyzed according to the perspective of students/alumni of Physics undergraduate courses (Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Science) at the Federal University of Espírito Santo. To do so, we perform a qualitative and exploratory study in which data was produced and collected via a mixed questionnaire in the second semester of 2019. The analytical process was based on Content Analysis, and aimed at interpreting perceptions and experiences related to their retentions. With a total of 27 (twenty seven) participants in the questionnaire, the most selected factors are: the insufficient previous mathematical knowledge, the demand level of the classes and evaluations, psychological disorders and/or health problems, as well as the attitude and the didactics of the professor in the classroom. Although our results allow for the establishment of relationships between these and other various factors highlighted by the students, they corroborate the fact that retention in Calculus I constitutes a strictly multifaceted and complex problem.
