Este artigo reforça a afirmação de William Sherman de que a literatura de viagens
funde testemunhos, informações secundárias e fantasia. O livro Peregrinação (ou Viagens -1583), de Fernão Mendes Pinto é comparado com a peça Barca do Inferno (1517), de Gil Vicente, argumentando-se que a voz ficcional/poética atua simultaneamente como espectador e participante imaginário.
