Translation, Deaf Communities, and Access to Justice: Projects Tackling Linguistic Inequalities

This paper discusses three bilingual projects in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese that operate in the field of access to justice in the Brazilian context, based on a qualitative and documentary approach. Translation Studies, Translation Policies, and Law provide the theoretical foundation for this study through the contributions of Abreu (2018), Beer (2024), Ozolins (2010), and Tymoczko (2007). The findings challenge narrow conceptions of access to justice focused exclusively on the judiciary by highlighting practices that operate across informational, preventive, and emergency dimensions. By systematizing three initiatives (DicasJur, TILSJUR Informa, and Gabinete de Crise) as technologies for linguistic rights, the study underscores the centrality of translation and interpreting in providing access to legal information and protecting fundamental rights. The main contributions are: (I) problematizing and challenging institutional practices within the justice system that reproduce forms of linguistic exclusion; and (II) strengthening the political, social, and professional role of Libras-Portuguese translators and interpreters in legal contexts.
