Political debate and educational management during the Truman and Eisenhower Administrations

After the Second World War, a major transformation of the international order took place, producing profound consequences for the domestic policies of the United States of America. Education became one of the central issues on institutional agendas and in political and legislative debates during the administrations of Harry Truman (Democratic Party) and Dwight Eisenhower (Republican Party). During this period, conservative discourse expanded significantly and shaped the management of educational institutions, teaching methods, and curricular content. Conservative social actors allied themselves with numerous political representatives – at both the federal and state levels – in order to impose their belief system on the educational system, seeking to preserve national identity and sociocultural tradition while criminalizing intellectual thought, progressive education, and left-wing ideologies.
