Abstract

Cinema constructs discourses about schools, teachers, and students, revealing anxieties and tensions within the educational universe. This study investigates school representations in horror films produced between 1955 and 1977. It is an exploratory-descriptive research that employs documental and film analysis. The discussion highlights the school as a space of violence and authoritarianism, reflecting the failure of the educational institution. Physical and psychological violence is a recurring element, and themes such as repression, control, and sexual desire expose the weaknesses of traditional education. The results indicate a diverse geographical distribution, with a predominance of gender-segregated boarding schools. The analysis of subgenres reveals a variety of approaches to the school environment. It is concluded that horror films serve as an instrument for educational investigation, questioning social roles and exposing fears and anxieties related to the school context.
