Abstract

Cinema constructs discourses about school, teachers, and students, revealing anxieties and tensions of the educational universe. This study investigates school representations in horror films produced between 1955 and 1977. Methodology: exploratory-descriptive research, using documentary and filmic analysis. Six films were identified from bibliographic surveys and on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Results: Diversified geographical distribution. Boarding schools segregated by gender predominate. The analysis of subgenres reveals a diversity of approaches. Discussion: The films portray school as a space of violence and authoritarianism, reflecting the failure of the school institution. Physical and psychological violence is a recurring element. Themes such as repression, bullying, control, and sexual desire highlight the fragility of traditional teaching. Conclusion: Horror films function as an instrument of educational investigation, questioning social roles and revealing fears and anxieties.
