The teaching-learning process of Botany in Basic Education has been challenging for teachers and students. In order to overcome some impediments, scientific dissemination activities such as science fairs, have been identified as a relevant tool in the scientific literacy for students. This article aimed to analyze the importance of carrying out research and scientific dissemination activities for students' motivation and interest in Botany. The research presented a qualitative approach and was developed with high school students from a public school in Rio de Janeiro. The analyses conducted revealed that many students have affinity with plants and recognize their importance, despite the little contact with the subject in the classroom. Research activities allowed students to have greater contact with local biodiversity, contributing to their motivation, and interest in the topic. In this sense, it is expected that this research contributes to the teaching practice in the search for scientific literacy and the reduction of botanical blindness in Basic Education students.
