This article reflects on the persistent role of Melancholy in Art. It starts from a general history of the concept of melancholy, listing examples of works by artists from the Symbolist and Impressionist periods to contemporary ones that bring emblematic situations that we can associate with Melancholy. Through a cut, which aims to recover images in which the typical iconography of the melancholic person is represented with his hand under his chin, the authors used a qualitative semiotic methodology in their iconographic analysis. Hoping to contribute to current reflections and approaches on the topic, this short article repositions Melancholia on the map of arts and culture.
