This essay seeks to explore whether the participatory aspect is natural to human production and whether capitalist media and hierarchical structures tend to fragment this characteristic. For this, the alternate reality game genre and its players’ communities are explored, and the characteristics of this game genre are identified in The Beast project. Through the studies of Arlindo Machado, it will be observed how these contemporary digital media enable the development of experiences with these characteristics. Finally, it will be discussed whether alternative reality games can be seen as a participatory design tool.
