Abstract: The research deals with the results of a period of the PhD in Cultural Heritage and Society at the University of Joinville – (UNIVILLE), Santa Catarina, Brazil, carried out at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon – (FBAUL), Portugal, in a doctoral format sandwich, financed by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel, linked to the Ministry of Education – (CAPES), from April to June 2024. The international research project begins field research in Portugal in an archive, focusing on forms of inventory and software used specifically for photographic collections and a photographic collection in Brazil. The inventory is a tool for identifying, surveying or listing cultural assets, and has been included since the first Brazilian and Portuguese laws, as well as in cultural heritage preservation policies. There are some variables, from the precautionary inventory to the knowledge inventory, and combined
with digital software tools, they can increase the valuation of cultural heritage. The problem lies in how inventories of photographic collections are carried out and whether they promote the expansion of the valuation of heritage, specifically collections that portray an imaginary of railway memory and history. The first case study was carried out at the Lisbon Municipal Archive – Photographic, in Portugal and the second in the collection of the extinct RFFSA, carried out by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute – (IPHAN), Brazil. The research concludes that the more investigations carried out in the collections, the more possibilities for opening descriptor fields and expanding the possibilities of search engines in the software, new inventories emerge, and thus the greater the possibilities for valuing collections.
