This paper analyzes the historical and conceptual origins of the notion of authenticity in Western art, relating it to the medieval cult of sacred relics. It demonstrates that the valorization of originality and authorship, and, consequently, the disapproval of forgeries, is a cultural construct. Through notable examples, it highlights the transposition of religious logic into the artistic field, in which the secular sacralization of the artist and the artwork reveals the transfer of authentication mechanisms to the art system.
