The influence of femininity and Albert Camus' personal relationships on the female characters in his works

This article presents a biographical and literary connection between the personal life of the philosopher Albert Camus and the female characters that appear in some of his works. The aim of this analysis is to reflect on a possible mirroring between Camus’s relationships with his mother, his wives, and his lover, and the development of the characters Marie, from The Stranger (1941), Janine, from the short story The Adulterous Woman (1957), the mother in Between Yes and No (1935), and the women mentioned in The Plague (1947). Finally, based on the interpretation of the concept of the model of femininity, as highlighted by Silvia Federici in her works Caliban and the Witch (2023) and Witches, Witch-Hunting, and Women (2019), we demonstrate how the elements that comprise this concept are present both in Camus’s perspective on women and in the female characters he created.
