This text proposes a reflection on the film adaptation of literary works guided by the notions of transtextuality and recreation, terms coined respectively by Gerard Genette and Haroldo de Campos. The objects analyzed will be the novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Wild Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, published in 1972, written by american journalist Hunter S. Thompson; two versions of adapted literary scripts and the film entitled Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, released in 1998, directed by american filmmaker Terry Gilliam. The main line of argumentation is that by investigating the transformations undertaken in the process of adaptation from one medium to another, it is revealed a work that can be considered an effort of recreation that finds in the writing of the literary script a defining moment.
