Abstract

Vilém Flusser identifies human beings as homo ludens, arguing that the ability to play is their defining characteristic. The meaning of the term “play” is not limited, however, to some specific activities such as chess or video games. It includes the most diverse phenomena of human existence. In this text, I intend to apply the Flusserian concept of play to contemporary industrial fashion and the way corporations and creators participate in the fashion system, in order to reinforce its rules, deny or sabotage them. To this end, I propose the analysis of three cases: luxury brands that began to invest in the world of video games, the latest collection by Brazilian creator Jum Nakao and the first collection shown in the West by Japanese creator Rei Kawakubo.
