O texto discute o papel de Camargo Guarnieri e Francisco Mignone como criadores deuma linguagem nacional de composição erudita, e sua relação com projeto estético de Mário deAndrade. Faz uma avaliação do estado dos estudos sobre o tema e traz considerações metodológicaspara se pensar o estudo da obra destes compositores dentro de uma concepção mais ampla de históriacultural do modernismo musical brasileiro.
